7 tricks for toddler fevers with no other symptoms, the best ways to treat them at home, and when to go see the doctor! Fevers in small kids can be especially stressful, so I’m sharing a few tricks to help you and your baby feel better till they get better!
Toddlers get fevers for so many reasons like Ear Infections, teeth coming in, viruses, and infections. Fever is the body’s immune response to illness or other factors. It’s not always a bad thing to have a fever, it just needs to be managed well.
The best thing you can do is to watch your child closely. If they are acting as if their ear hurts, their mouth hurts, they get a stiff neck, or a sore throat, or runny nose that can give away a cold, bacterial infection, or cause of a fever…. Also, watch them for signs of dehydration.
But when there are no other symptoms than a child’s fever, you just manage the fever well, and wait. Young children can fever for 3 full days before you need to take them in to check for an infection or other possible problem.
Reactions to Toddler Fevers with no Other Symptoms
My 6 kids all respond differently to fevers and illnesses. My middle daughter rarely ever gets sick, but when she does, she runs a super high fever and it’s hard to control with medicine. I had to take her to the emergency room once when after giving her a full dose of children’s Tylenol and a full dose of children’s Ibprophen, her fever went up to 105. While we waited in the ER, Her eyes were “burning” to the point that the whites were actually red. Of course, the WR was busy with someone before us, and we waited almost 30 minutes to be seen….
I went up to the lady at the admin desk and said, if you don’t get her in now, I’m going to have to take her home and put her in the bath! Finally, they got us in. And what did the Dr. do? He took her temp (it was 105 which could cause brain damage, thankfully it did not!) and gave her another full dose of children’s Tylenol and Children IBprophen. That’s it! And her fever went down. Frustrating! She did not have an infection, no cold or flu… Just a summertime virus, with no other explanations or symptoms.
Of course, this just happens to be the same daughter who also hallucinates with high fevers (which seem to be the only kind of fevers she gets!)
How To Treat Toddlers Fevers With No Other Symptoms
It’s frustrating when your child’s fever has no others symptoms because you don’t know what’s wrong, and there’s no quick fix. But in my experience, my kids’ fevers have been from a virus and have no other symptoms. It’s a bummer because with viral infections (or serious infections) antibiotics do not help. You just treat the fever, love your baby, and wait for them to get better.
When my little ones get sick, everything else gets put on hold, and I (and the rest of the family) dedicate my time and attention, and their comfort. It’s easier to do if you just accept it and learn to enjoy the time, than trying to fight it.
It doesn’t matter how many kids you have, it’s always a bit stressful when your littles have a fever! But, the good news is that there are a few tools that help manage that fever and ease the stress.
I like to keep several things in my medicine cupboard (house and freezer) so I have them ready in case someone gets sick.

I like to keep several things in my medicine cupboard (house and freezer) so I have them ready in case someone gets sick.
1. A Cooler
Summertime viral illnesses are the worst because it’s hot outside and you need to keep your child cool. We usually expect to be healthy in the summertime. And being sick in the summer feels like nature is working against you.
You most likely already have this one, but if not, consider it. A good Air Conditioner is worth its weight in gold when it’s hot outside and you need to keep a child with a fever cool.
Keeping a child in a cool room when they have a fever helps to cool them off too! In fact, I usually take my child’s clothes off too to help them cool down a little faster! And I love rocking my almost naked kids on the rocking chair!
2. A rocking chair!
I can’t recommend this one enough! A good rocking chair pays huge dividends when you’re raising children… But especially when they’re sick!
The back-and-forth swinging motion of a rocking chair, along with the closeness of holding your child when they’re sick comforts them (and you!)
And although it may or may not be scientifically proven yet, I firmly believe that comfort and love help them feel better faster! It helps you both relax and rest so your energy can be used to heal and get better.
Rocking chairs aren’t cheap when you buy them brand new (they run between $350 and $800 on average). But, you can get them for a great price on Facebook marketplace!
3. A good forehead swipe digital thermometer!
This is a game changer, and makes taking an accurate temperature and monitoring it so much easier for you and your baby! When little kids are fussy nothing is worse than trying to hold a thermometer under their tongue or in their armpit for a full minute. Normal body temperature is 98 degrees, 99 and above is considered a fever. 99-100 is a low fever, over 100 is a mid-range fever, and over 102 is a high fever.
With a good forehead thermometer, you just swipe it across their forehead while holding down a button. It’s fast and easy and quickly tells you their temperature. It’s so much easier!
Digital thermometers, especially forehead swipe styles, are so much easier to take than oral temperature and rectal temperature with a rectal thermometer! An ear thermometer is also very accurate and easy to use, but the forehead is the easiest to get your child’s temperature.
4. Pedialyte Popsicles or Popsicles!
Pedialyte popsicles are a TREAT that kids can enjoy WHILE they replace the electrolytes they lose with a fever, and stay hydrated! It is super important that children get enough fluids, and popsicles are great oral rehydration solutions! The smaller the child, the faster they get dehydrated with fevers. So this is an important one!
If you don’t have access to Pedialyte popsicles, juice popsicles will help them get hydrated too. Just try to stay away from the sugary popsicles. Natural juice or Pedialyte popsicles are best.
5. Children or Infants Anti-Fever Medication
I always keep Children’s fever reducers or Infant’s Tylenol and Children’s Ibuprofen on hand. My 3-year-old won’t take the syrup (that my other kids loved) so I make sure to have the chewable ones on hand too! Make sure to keep fresh bottles on hand that aren’t expired.
I restock my children’s medicines every fall before going into cold and flu season. In my experience, name brands and store brands seem to work the same, so save a few bucks! Make sure to follow the label or your doctor’s instructions for administering medicine according to weight or your child’s age.
6. Special Drinks
I keep Gatorade (in single-serve bottles) in the cupboard for when this happens… My kids get fevers with no other symptoms. My kids would never drink Pedialyte because they hated the taste, but they like Gatorade. (of course, you could also keep Pedialyte on hand, if your kids like it!)
I keep these in the medicine cupboard for a reason… Sometimes I buy Gatorade and keep that in the pantry for the kids during sports seasons. However, no one is allowed to take these Gatorade bottles out of the medicine cupboard unless they have a fever, or are dehydrated. A child’s body is so much smaller that they have fewer fluids and get dehydrated much faster.
7. Bubble Bath
Sometimes medicine does not work well enough. And sometimes, you just don’t want to keep administering medicine. A room lukewarm bath works wonders to cool a fever fast, but sometimes kids need the motivation to take a bath, and a bubble bath works great!
If a regular bath is not an option, a sponge bath also works!
Do not use cold baths as they can shock their fevered body… Always lukewarm.
Sometimes you can use all these tools, and your child still has low-grade toddler fevers with no other symptoms…
That’s OK as long as it is a mild fever and you keep them hydrated. Sometimes a persistent fever goes away with medicine but comes back when it wears off, and this repeats for several days.
I’ve been through this for 5 days in a row of toddler fevers with no other symptoms, and it was just a viral infection. That’s when you need endurance! You just keep treating your child to keep the fever low, pray, and wait. (You can always take your child to your healthcare providers too which I usually do after 3 days of battling a fever.)
If you use all these tools and your child’s fever a high temperature over 100 for infants, or a child’s higher temperature of 102 or more for older children, seek medical care. I call the doctor or take them into the Dr. office or the emergency department (when Dr. office is closed.) (Causes of fever could be urinary tract infections, ear infection, and another fatal disease that needs to be treated professionally.
Remember to keep fevering children well hydrated, because they get dehydrated by a fever much faster than big kids and adults. Dehydration in young children can be very serious on its own and may require hospitalization.
