WHAT ARE STARBUCKS REFRESHERS?
Refreshers are chilled, juice based, beverages from Starbucks that containing fruit juice, green coffee extract, and are garnished with fruit pieces.
They’re a delightful option for those who aren’t fond of coffee and teas, and are low in calories!
Strawberry Acai is the most popular Refresher flavor, but there are other varieties available, like Mango Dragonfruit and Pineapple Passionfruit (the Kiwi Starfruit Refresher was recently discontinued).
The bases are usually mixed with water to create Refreshers. However, they can also be combined with coconut milk (for the Pink Drink, Dragon Drink, Paradise Drink,.)
What’s in Starbucks Strawberry Acai Refresher?
According to Starbucks, Strawberry Acai Refreshers feature “sweet strawberry flavors accented by passion fruit and açaí notes, caffeinated with green coffee extract—a welcoming sweet spot of refreshment.”
The recipe ingredients include a strawberry acai base, ice, and freeze-dried strawberries.
The strawberry acai base consists of water, sugar, white grape juice concentrate, citric acid, natural flavors, natural green coffee flavor, fruit and vegetable juice, and Stevia.
Do Starbucks Refreshers Contain Caffeine?
Absolutely! Some people assume that because Refreshers are juice-based, they are caffeine-free. However, Refreshers actually contain a significant amount of caffeine, approximately 45 milligrams in a grande size, due to the inclusion of green coffee extract.
The green coffee extract doesn’t contribute any flavor to the drink. Therefore, if you’re making it at home and prefer a caffeine-free version, just omit the green coffee extract! I’m using MaryRuth’s Ginseng Extract instead!

Green Coffee Bean Powder vs. MaryRuth’s Ginseng Extract
When comparing the ingredients used in the Starbucks version of the Strawberry Acai Refresher, you’ll find that green coffee bean powder is used as an energy-boosting component. However, in our homemade recipe, we opt for MaryRuth’s Ginseng Extract as a healthier alternative.
- Energy Boost: Green coffee bean powder contains caffeine, which is the primary source of its energizing effects. Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, increasing alertness and temporarily boosting energy levels. On the other hand, MaryRuth’s Ginseng Extract provides an energy boost through its adaptogenic properties. Ginseng is believed to support overall well-being by enhancing the body’s response to stress and improving energy levels without the jitters or crash associated with caffeine.
- Nutritional Profile: Green coffee bean powder is derived from unroasted coffee beans, which allows it to retain a higher amount of certain compounds, including chlorogenic acid—a potent antioxidant. However, green coffee bean powder is generally consumed in small amounts and does not significantly contribute to overall nutrition. In contrast, MaryRuth’s Ginseng Extract offers a wider range of nutritional benefits, including potential immune system support, improved cognitive function, and increased stamina. Ginseng has been used in traditional medicine for its various health-promoting properties.
- Sustainability: Green coffee bean powder is sourced from coffee beans, which raises concerns regarding sustainability and ethical practices within the coffee industry. Coffee production can have significant environmental and social impacts. On the other hand, MaryRuth’s Ginseng Extract is derived from ginseng root, which is considered more sustainable and environmentally friendly. MaryRuth’s commitment to organic and responsibly sourced ingredients ensures a more sustainable choice for your Strawberry Acai Refresher.
Starbucks Refreshers do contain caffeine.
The caffeine content in Starbucks Refreshers can vary depending on the specific product and size. In general, Starbucks Refreshers typically contain a moderate amount of caffeine, lower than that found in a cup of coffee but higher than caffeine-free beverages. The caffeine in Starbucks Refreshers typically comes from natural sources such as green coffee bean extract. If you are sensitive to caffeine or prefer to avoid it, you can inquire about the caffeine content of specific Starbucks Refreshers options or consider ordering a caffeine-free alternative.
By opting for MaryRuth’s Ginseng Extract, you can enjoy the benefits of an energy boost without relying on caffeine from green coffee bean powder. The adaptogenic properties of ginseng offer a more balanced and sustainable source of energy, promoting overall well-being. Additionally, choosing MaryRuth’s products ensures a commitment to organic ingredients and sustainability, aligning with a healthier and more conscious lifestyle.

Recipe Variations
There are several modifications you can make to this drink if you don’t have all the ingredients or if you want to customize it, including:
- Exclude the powdered passion fruit and acai! If you don’t have acai powder or passion fruit powder, the Refresher will still taste delicious.
- Use fresh strawberries instead of freeze dried strawberries in your cup!
- You can add 1/4 cup of sugar to the white grape juice and strawberry mixture before boiling it in the base for a thicker simple syrup base that is sweeter.
- If you’ve already made the base want to make it sweeter, add a little agave or honey.
- Mint Leaves: Enhance the overall freshness by adding a few mint leaves!
- Coconut Water: Replace a portion of the cold water with coconut water for a tropical twist. Coconut water adds natural sweetness and electrolytes, making your refresher even more hydrating and satisfying.
- Agave Syrup or Honey: If you prefer a sweeter refresher, consider adding a drizzle of agave syrup or honey. Start with a teaspoon and adjust to your desired sweetness level, stirring well to ensure it’s thoroughly mixed.
- Mixed Berry Blend: Experiment with different berries by using a combination of strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, or blackberries. This variation will create a delightful medley of flavors and boost the antioxidant content of your refresher.
- Sparkling Water: For a bubbly and effervescent twist, replace a portion of the cold water with chilled sparkling water. This variation adds a delightful fizziness to your drink, making it feel extra refreshing.
- Chia Seeds: Add a tablespoon of chia seeds to the blender along with the other ingredients for a nutritional boost. Chia seeds provide fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and a satisfying texture that will add an interesting twist to your Strawberry Acai Refresher.
Ways to use Strawberry Base
Many people order the Strawberry Acai Lemonade, which uses the base with lemonade instead of water!
Additionally, Starbucks “Pink Drink” is another version of this beverage, just substitute water with sweetened coconut milk!
Experiment with the Strawberry Acai Refresher base, to make your own combinations!
Storing Strawberry Acai Refresher
I suggest storing the Refresher base in a large mason jar in the refrigerator. When stored properly, it should last for about 2 weeks.
