A DIY outdoor fireplace kit is a great way to cozy up this fall and winter season, save on labor costs too! An outdoor fireplace is one thing I've always wanted to add to our homestead... We will be adding ours in the spring!
An outdoor fireplace can be a fantastic way to connect with your community. Consider hosting regular gatherings, potlucks, or even outdoor movie nights around the fire. It can become a neighborhood hotspot.
I love the look of rocked fireplaces with a nice chimney above! They just feel more cozy, and they're much prettier than a fire pit on the ground. And you can roast your marshmallows and hot dogs without the smoke choking you out because it goes UP the smoke chamber chimney!
There are also options for outdoor oven fireplaces. These fireplaces are up off the ground and are made to cook outdoors! Outdoor Pizza Ovens are just another option for a DIY outdoor fireplace!
There are endless choices for DIY outdoor fireplace kits available in 2023.
Some come with pizza ovens, some are outdoor fire pizza ovens, some are pretty and some are just functional.
Prices range between about $700 to $10,000 dollars depending on how fancy you want to get. The average price for stone DIY outdoor fireplace kit is around $3000, and takes a weekend for the average Joe to set up. And you can order them online or pick some up from your local Home Depo.
After researching for days, I'm sharing my top DIY outdoor fireplace kits, and looks. So, if you're like me, trying to decide which one you want, hopefully this will help you too!
Considerations
Design Considerations
When selecting an outdoor fireplace kit, think about the design that complements your homestead. Consider factors like the architectural style of your home, the landscape, and the outdoor space's overall aesthetics.
Materials Matter
Outdoor fireplaces come in various materials, such as stone, brick, concrete, and even metal. Each material has its unique look, durability, and maintenance requirements. Make sure the chosen material fits your vision and climate.
Safety Precautions
Safety is paramount. Ensure that your DIY project follows local building codes and safety standards. You might need permits for this construction, depending on your area.
Heat Efficiency
Consider the type of fuel you'll use. Wood-burning fireplaces provide that classic ambiance but require more maintenance. Gas or propane fireplaces are cleaner and more convenient, although they might lack the traditional charm.
Maintenance
Outdoor fireplaces require maintenance to ensure longevity. This includes cleaning, inspecting for damage, and protecting it from the elements. Each fireplace kit has it's own requirements, so make sure to read through manufacturers instructions on maintenance before purchasing!
Customization
You can personalize your outdoor fireplace with unique features like a built-in wood storage area, a mantle for decorations, or even a built-in pizza oven.
Budget Considerations
While DIY can save on labor costs, be aware that the cost of materials and the kit itself can vary significantly... So, plan your budget accordingly.
DIY Skill Level
Weather you're putting together a fireplace kit or building an outdoor fireplace on your own, consider your skill level! Assess your DIY skills honestly. Building an outdoor fireplace can be a complex project. If you're not confident in your abilities, consider consulting with a professional or attending a workshop to learn the necessary skills.
Sustainability
Sustainable building practices and materials, like using reclaimed or locally sourced materials, can reduce your environmental impact and create a unique, rustic look!

Location Matters
The location of your outdoor fireplace is crucial. Think about wind patterns and proximity to flammable structures. It's not just about aesthetics; it's also about safety.
When envisioning your outdoor fireplace area, think beyond just the fire itself. It's about creating a space that beckons people to come together, relax, and make lasting memories. Here are some key considerations for crafting the best outdoor fireplace area for gatherings:
Ample Seating
Comfortable seating is a must. Invest in quality outdoor furniture that can withstand the elements. Consider a mix of options like cozy lounge chairs, a spacious sectional, or even built-in stone or concrete benches. Ensure there's enough seating to accommodate your typical group size.
Arrangement
The layout of your seating is crucial. Arrange it in a way that encourages conversation and allows everyone to enjoy the warmth of the fire. Circular seating arrangements often work well, as they create a cozy atmosphere and allow for easy interaction.
Firewood Storage
If you're going for a wood-burning fireplace, incorporate a stylish storage area for firewood nearby. It not only adds to the ambiance but also ensures you don't have to trek back and forth to restock the fire.
Lighting
Outdoor lighting can transform your gathering space. Consider installing soft, warm lighting, like string lights or lanterns, to create a magical, inviting atmosphere. Path lighting can also guide guests safely to your outdoor fireplace area.
Wind Protection
Depending on your location, wind can be a significant factor. Consider installing windbreaks such as trellises, hedges, or a strategically placed outdoor screen to shield your fireplace area from strong gusts.
Outdoor Cooking Options
An outdoor fireplace often offers opportunities for cooking, whether it's roasting marshmallows or grilling. Incorporate a nearby table or countertop for food preparation and serving, making it easy to cater to your guests' culinary needs.
Mantel or Shelving
Adding a mantel or shelving above or near the fireplace provides a perfect spot for decorations, plants, or even a small outdoor speaker for music during gatherings.
Cozy Additions
To make your space even cozier, include blankets, throw pillows, and outdoor rugs. These not only add comfort but also make the area feel inviting and homely.
Landscaping and Greenery
Surrounding your outdoor fireplace with plants and greenery enhances its appeal. Consider potted plants, garden beds, or even a vine-covered pergola to create a lush, natural setting.
Entertainment
Think about entertainment options, like an outdoor TV or a portable projector for movie nights under the stars. Having board games or cards on hand can also keep guests engaged.
Safety Features
Ensure the area is equipped with safety features like a fire extinguisher, a first-aid kit, and clear escape routes in case of emergencies.
Weather Protection
If you plan to use your outdoor fireplace area year-round, consider adding a pergola, retractable awning, or a gazebo to provide protection from rain and excessive sun.
Consider adding a walkway to your outdoor fireplace space with pavers!
The photo above is obviously a GAS fireplace, so this is not an option if you're wanted to roast marshmallows or hot dogs, but it's super clean and easy for a cozy porch! This space can be enjoyed come rain or sun!
Love the classic brick exterior shown here...It never goes out of style! Also the pavers with grass (or turf) between them is a timeless look.
