In this post, I'm showing you how to make a fall wreath for only $5, in about 40 minutes!
It's fall, and I've been eyeing the ornamental feathery grass mounds around my home for about a month... They're beautiful and will look spectacular on a wreath!
We have a ton of Karl Foerster Feather Reed grass mounds growing around our home and neighborhood. If you don't have any, I suggest you plant some! It's relatively cheap it's a beautiful accent in the yard! Plus you can use it to make these beautiful fall wreaths! (see below)
This ornamental grass grows in mounds with these tall reeds (seeds on stems, kinda like wheat) that shoot up and make a beautiful feathery display.
These reeds get chopped down in the fall so that they can send up new shoots in the spring. But, why let these feathery grass reeds go to waste? Enjoy them through the fall and Thanksgiving season (or all year!)
How To Make a Fall Wreath with Feather Reed Grass
First, locate the ornamental grass you'll be using for your wreath! If you don't have any, I'd suggest that you consider planting some! It's pretty inexpensive, makes a great landscaping statement, and makes beautiful fall wreaths!
Also, watch the local landscapers and catch them before they throw away the ones they cut off in your neighborhood!
(Landscapers trim up the common areas around our home and chop them off every fall. Do them a favor, and trim them up really nice before it freezes!)
For this wreath, I used 9 - 1 inch bundles.
Cut the tops of the reeds off leaving about 3 inches of stem under the feathery seed reeds.
Bunch reeds together into about 1-inch bundles using rubber bands... I used these goody brand hair bands!
Place 1st bunch onto the wire wreath, and secure it with floral wire. Don't cut the wire. Wrap the floral wire around the base of the bunch 3-4 times till it does not move.
Place the 2nd reed bundle lower on the wire wreath to cover the wires fastening the first bunch.
Use the same roll of uncut floral wire to secure the second bunch of feather reeds at the base. Wrap the floral wire around it 3-4 times (till it does not move.)
Continue this pattern all the way around your wire wreath, placing a new feather reed bunch about 3-4 inches under each other.
When you come to the end, and your wreath is full all the way around, cut the floral wire and tie it off nice and tight.
Pull and adjust the feather reeds to cover the wires and wreath, and hang it!

Feather Reed Grass
Karl Foerster Feather Reed Grass grows in zones 5b-11b, and does best when planted in part sun to full sun locations.
This is a perennial plant so you can plant it once, and enjoy it for years to come!
These grass mounds grow to 24-36 inches wide, and 48-72 inches tall!
It's super easy to maintain, just water regularly, and trim back every fall or early spring.
