BBQ Bacon Baked Beans Recipe Ingredients

Just a few simple ingredients here!

  • 2 large yellow or white onions diced small
  • 1 tablespoon butte
  • 3 can of beans. (I use pinto, white, navy beans and black beans.)
  • 1/2 cup your favorite BBQ Sauce. Or homemade BBQ Sauce!
  • 1/4 cup date syrup. (you can also use real maple syrup or dark brown sugar)
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1 and 1/2 cup lean bacon pieces & bits. (I use 1- 6oz pkg of Hormel real bacon bits 40% less fat.)

How to Make Easy Baked Beans Recipe

  1. On a cutting board peel and dice 2 large onions, into very small pieces.
  2. Use a medium sized sauce pan, and melt 1 tablespoon butter over medium heat.
  3. Add chopped onion, cover and sauté till translucent, stir occasionally so they don’t burn! (about 5 minutes.)
  4. Add 3 cans of drained canned beans. (White, pinto beans, black beans, kidney beans all work well.)
  5. Add 1/2 cup of BBQ sauce. (You can always add more if you want yours a bit thinner, but as it simmers, then cools, it will thicken too.)
  6. Add 1/4 cup of date syrup (or real maple syrup) and 1 teaspoon dry mustard, and stir till evenly mixed.
  7. Simmer uncovered over low heat till flavors meld into a savory sauce, about 15 minutes…. Or just keep on low heat, stirring occasionally, while preparing your main dish!
  8. Serve & Enjoy!

You can also add all the ingredients to your slow cooker, Dutch oven or crock pot, and just let it cook 4-6 hours!

Using Dry Beans

  1. Measure Dry Pinto Beans. Grab a measuring cup and scoop out approximately 1 cup (200 grams) of dry pinto beans. We want to ensure we have enough beans to yield the same amount as 3 small cans.
  2. Rinse and Sort the Beans: Place the dry pinto beans in a colander and give them a good rinse under cold water. This step helps remove any impurities or dirt. Take a moment to inspect the beans and remove any damaged or discolored ones.
  3. Soak the Beans (Optional): Soaking the beans can speed up cooking time and help them cook evenly. I’ll share two methods:
    • Quick Soak Method: Put the rinsed beans in a pot and cover them with water. Bring the water to a boil and let the beans cook for 2 minutes. Remove the pot from the heat, cover it with a lid, and allow the beans to soak for 1 hour. Drain and rinse the beans before moving on.
    • Overnight Soak Method: Take the rinsed beans and place them in a bowl. Ensure they are covered with water by at least 2 inches (5 cm). ADD 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar. Let the beans soak overnight, around 8 to 12 hours. Drain and rinse the beans before proceeding.
  4. Cook the Beans! Transfer the soaked and drained beans to a large pot and add enough water to cover them by a few inches. I want to ensure they have enough space to cook evenly. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and let the beans simmer gently. I’ll keep an eye on them, as cooking time varies, usually taking around 1 to 1.5 hours. Tender is what we’re aiming for!

Now use these beans in place of canned beans in this delicious baked beans recipe!
